Bachelor/Master of Arts in Humanities
|
Overview
The M.A. Humanities program is a course of study that deals with the branches of knowledge that examine what is most human in man; with the faculties that distinguish man from other creatures such as thought, language, the capacity for artistic creation, freedom, and personal history. The study of the Humanities is fundamental in order to develop a conscious awareness of what it means to be human. A society that neglects the Humanities loses its direction and fails to discover meaning in the world. Thus, this program of study prepares the student for the future by identifying who and what we, as humans, are today.
The M.A. Humanities program of UA&P is designed to provide students with a broad grasp of the humanistic disciplines of history, literature, philosophy and the arts. The program offered is one of learning, research and service, the goal of which is to preserve, explore and enhance the cultural legacy of mankind as it is embodied in historical, literary, philosophical and artistic works.
The program seeks to enhance the students’ ability to view complex issues from a variety of perspectives. Drawing on classical and contemporary approaches, its courses present and illustrate the basic concepts, theoretical frameworks and methodologies of the humanities. In effect, it instills an intellectual awareness of what it means to be human.
