Master of Science in Management

Overview

The Master of Science in Management is flagship graduate program of the School of Management (SMN). It is a unique two-year graduate course that equips its graduates with knowledge, skills and attitude to transform the challenges of the 21st century into business opportunities and socially responsible enterprises. It arms them with strong analytical skills, strategic view of the business economic environment and the expertise and disposition to manage organizations in hyper-growth industries, family businesses, emerging markets, and big businesses in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Program offers, in the first year, a generalist view of basic management functions (Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Operations, and Enterprise Resource Systems). On the second year, the focus is on a multi-disciplined analytical framework, a holistic and strategic perspective to decision-making, and a systematic approach to implementation.

The program is also offered to individuals who have earned their graduate degree from other universities. Previous work experience is not a requirement, although those currently employed must take a temporary leave of absence from their jobs so they can study full time to earn their MScM degree. They must also first take the MScM Qualifying Program (MQP), which is given annually during summer before the first term.

The Program aims to develop management professionals with an entrepreneurial mindset for the Asia-Pacific region.

MScM Management Professionals have the professional competence to develop coherent, analytical and research-based business plan that is, market-driven, financially sound, integrated with the socio-economic environment, and ethical.

Mission
To develop students who are ethical and research-oriented and can operate in an entrepreneurial context in the Asia Pacific region.

Program Delivery
The Program is delivered using applied research methodologies, with emphasis on team-based project study. The combination of academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities stimulates life and is further enhanced by a work study model via business-academe partnerships for internship placements. The formal student-mentoring process and career planning workshops contribute to a personalized learning experiences.

Work-Study Program
Phase I: Project-based Learning
In the summer of the first year, the MScM students are immersed in a corporate setting for 450 hours (3 months).They apply management theories to projects in different functional areas of an organization (i.e., actual business plans/feasibility studies, including the preparation of actual industry studies, marketing plans, and human resource management plans). The internship design is customized and aligned with the career objectives, which each participant formulates during Career Planning Workshops. Mentors are assigned to follow-up the progress of the student’s development. Students may opt to do their internship abroad.

Phase II: Business Academe Partnership
In the second year, MScM students are required to handle strategic projects with the host company. This is a 9-month paid Internship(s) with the Business-Academe Program Partners (i.e., IBM Phils., Citibank, Nestle, Shell Phils., etc.). Through GMS they gain intensive experience and professional training even before they graduate.

Two-year Individualized Career Planning
MScM is the only program in the University that offers individualized career planning and management workshops to its students. Its main objectives are to determine the core competencies and interest of each student and to help them develop their career plans.

Global Exchange Program
MScM is involved in exchange programs with various universities in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. The students get the chance to study for a semester and experience education in a different country. Likewise. MScM accepts students from different countries to enhance cultural diversity in the learning process.
